I think that we have all had days like this. This may sound strange, but one of the things that I find reassuring is to check my barometer. We have one of the traditional kinds with a large round dial and a pointer that you can set to the last reading. You tap the case to unstick the mechanism and the needle moves to indicate the current air pressure. Usually a rise in pressure indicates that clearer weather is on the way. Falling pressure indicates a coming storm. In either case you have an unmediated and physical prediction of the weather in the hours to come. Nature is much more powerful than any of us as individuals, but we don't have to live in ignorance of her moods, and we can take some comfort in knowing them. We are not entirely powerless to set our own course (or at least close the windows and make sure the heat is working).
